Arts and Cultural Education
Creative and Expressive Arts have a particularly high profile at Swiss Cottage School. We work with a range of artists, arts organisations and art forms, to develop learners around their individual interests, talents, and points of learning.
In addition to having specialists staff within the school, children and young people have access to visiting practitioners such as actors, dancers, puppeteers, musicians, art therapists, and photographers. This supports progress in in the priority areas underpinning our ‘creative curriculum’: communication, thinking skills, and personal and social development. Learners in Upper School have opportunities to take the ‘Arts Award’ or study ‘Arts and Craft’ modules as part of their ‘Life and Living’ accreditation.
We are leading thinking around arts education and learning disability. Swiss Cottage is part of a small group of teaching schools, developing training resources for arts educators. We sit on the Department of Education Expert Advisory Group for Cultural Education, which is influencing national developments in this area. Locally, we participate in the Camden Cultural Commissioning Project, and have partnerships the Camden Arts Centre, and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. We also work closely with the disability arts charity ‘Shape’.
