The EmployMEnt Pathway: ‘Card & Design’ was the initial Social Enterprise that ignited the idea to develop an inclusive model of supported employment at Swiss Cottage School; the simple model of breaking a ‘business’ into departments and carving roles for individuals based on their skills and preferences. This encourages focus on what a person can do and not on what they can’t.
Today we are hosting a stall at 5PS – Camden Council’s community building with council offices, leisure centre and library. To prepare for this, the Production Department have been busy folding cards, sticking the designs on the front, putting a label on the back, counting five cards and packaging them with envelopes. The materials they are using were ordered previously by the Administration Department. For more info see the EmployMEnt Pathway: Card & Design page.
As a support team, staff are continuously observing and making individual reasonable adjustments to the production process to ensure students are working as independently and as naturally as possible. Putting a work uniform (aprons) on and taking it off, signifies when work begins and when it ends for students. The students take pride in their roles, whether through words or body language, which reinforces that they understand the importance and fulfilment of work.
