For the EmployMEnt Pathway: ‘Venture Café’ Team, the preparation starts at the beginning of the week for our Wednesday Café service. On Monday, the visual menu is prepared and flyers delivered around school to promote the Venture Café. In the afternoon the Marketing and Prep Department collect the shopping from the local supermarket ready for the Catering Department to prepare on Wednesday morning.
As with the ‘Card & Design’ Team, departments are built based on skill sets and whilst a student may not engage well with serving customers, they may enjoy the repetitive style job of putting sandwiches together or perhaps show fluency in matching so would prefer to use letters to ‘write’ the menu on the peg board.
When we think of the job of ‘working in a café’ this can mean so much more than just preparing and serving food. If through the EmployMEnt Pathway model we can promote inclusive job carving, then we can better share our experiences when building capacity in supported employment with employers.
