Help us recycle plastic – Powerful Plastics

Plastic, plastic everywhere, how useful you can be! Look outside the window… how much plastic can you see? Plastic is a fantastic material with a multitude of uses, but it seems that people are not too sure what to do once they are finished with it.

Swiss Cottage is participating in the ecoACTIVE Powerful Plastics project. We will be competing against the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest, to collect the most plastic waste for recycling. The top three schools will be able to choose from a selection of recycled prizes up to £100.

What plastics can be recycled?

All household plastic bottles and a variety of other mixed plastic containers can be recycled as long as they have not contained pesticides or motor oil. Is it plastic? Is it a container? If yes, we can recycle it. Recyclable mixed plastic containers include:

  • Plastic milk bottles
  • Plastic juice bottles
  • Plastic soft drink and water bottles
  • Plastic shampoo/shower gel bottles
  • Plastic food trays
  • Plastic yoghurt pots
  • Plastic margarine and ice-cream tubs
  • Plastic cups
  • Plastic drinking straws
  • Plastic bottle lids
  • Plastic magazine wrapping
  • Plastic bags

  • No crisp packets or sweet wrappers
  • No shrink or bubble wrap
  • No plastic toys
  • No polystyrene packing or beads
  • No CDs/DVDs or cases
  • No Video tapes or cassettes
  • No cable ties
  • No garden pots
  • No toner cartridges
  • No tupperware containers
  • No electrical items

Please make sure your plastic items are clean and empty. Please do not crush or flatten items and keep plastic bags untied and empty. All plastic recycling to be put in the special bins at the main reception. Thank you for your help!
